When coaching technical skills like passing or heading, the use of a whiteboard and my voice are generally not enough for the players to gain an understanding of the skill. The best way to teach a skill to someone is to demonstrate it yourself using your own body. Players can watch and relate to the placement of different body parts and have a clear demonstration of what I am telling them to do. The saying ‘a picture speaks a thousand words’ is never truer than when demonstrating a skill or a body movement to someone for the very first time. Showing someone how to do something is a far superior way of teaching someone than just telling them how. I once coached a South American player who couldn’t speak English, I tried to use my body and demonstrate things to the group more during that session as that allowed him to recognize what I was trying to say and still allow him to learn. No matter what nationality, race or language someone comes from, the ‘monkey see-monkey do’ learning style can be an effective way to pick up new motions.
