By the end of his time at Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson was 71 years old. At this point in his career he had learnt to manage the players and coach using media and his voice. Ferguson brought in many world class coaches to work under him, they were all aware of exactly how he wanted to play, and carried out demonstrations on his behalf. Sir Alex still used body language in the form of pointing and gestures to add to the words he was speaking.
On page xiii of his autobiography, in the introduction, Sir Alex praises the influence of his many coaches and assistant managers he had during his time at Manchester United. These are the people he worked with and whom he delegated training and demonstrative responsibilities to:
"Assistants and coaches helped me greatly down the years. Archie Knox, a real ally to me in my early years, Brian Kidd, Nobby Stiles, Eric Harrison, a truly wonderful youth coach. Steve McClaren, a very innovative and energetic coach. Carlos Queiroz and Rene Meulensteen - two magnificent coaches - and my assistant manager, Mick Phelan, a really shrewd, observant, true football man."
