A whiteboard is a coach’s best friend. Using a marker and magnets I can write instructions, set up formations, draw diagrams and explain situations to my players with a visual reference to supplement what I am saying using my voice. The white board is an excellent piece of visual media which allows the players to have a picture of what I am talking about so they can find it easier to relate and take on board the coaching points. Diagrams and formations pictured on the white board would look, for anyone not involved with soccer, like a great big mixture of scribbles, shapes and jargon. Diagrams, formations and other drawings are an excellent way of communicating a point to players who may not be fully up to speed with the language or are more of a visual learner. Players names or numbers can be used on magnets to make it even easier for them to understand what their own personal role is and how whatever I am showing them directly relates to them. Along with the use of my voice, the use of a whiteboard allows me to expand on the tactics I am teaching and give the players a better understanding of what is expected.
